Pilates is the mind–body functional movement conditioning created by Joseph Pilates in 1920s. Although different approaches have emerged based on the interpretation by Pilates pioneers, what keeps Pilates unique is the body awareness, core strength, and balance that the system provides. Pilates is also known for its low-impact conditioning. It requires concentration and focus on the alignment of the body in order to perform optimally. Pilates equipment, such as the Reformer, provides support for senior populations, individuals who have physical limitations, those who are recovering from injuries, and prenatal and postnatal women, while challenging people who are looking for athletic-performance enhancement.
Pilates Reformer is a piece of resistance exercise equipment used to facilitate a group class. The carriage on the Reformer moves back and forth with attached springs. Part of the process creates resistance to your body weight. Reformer supports you to balance and successfully position your body in alignment, at the same time challenging you by creating additional instability. When it’s approached mindfully, this low-impact equipment helps you correct your posture and increase your balance and strength.

Pilates mat work is done on the floor on a mat, using one’s body weight while in different positions. Sometimes various props will be used. Classes are held in the Mind–Body Studio, a calming and mindful environment. Instructors have a background in dance, rehabilitation, and postural analysis, allowing them to provide various modifications in a group setting, depending on each client’s needs. Classes are both supportive and challenging in order to ensure the participants’ safety and improvement.
