Pilates is the mind–body functional movement conditioning created by Joseph Pilates in 1920s. Although different approaches have emerged based on the interpretation by Pilates pioneers, what keeps Pilates unique is the body awareness, core strength, and balance that the system provides. Pilates is also known for its low-impact conditioning. It requires concentration and focus on the alignment of the body in order to perform optimally. Pilates equipment, such as the Reformer, provides support for senior populations, individuals who have physical limitations, those who are recovering from injuries, and prenatal and postnatal women, while challenging people who are looking for athletic-performance enhancement.
